The best excursions to do in Dominican Republic

At Travel2Holidays we invite you to discover the most popular excursions with the best deals in the Dominican Republic. This jewel of the Caribbean has a wide variety of possibilities for all tastes and all audiences. We assure you that you won’t know where to start when you discover these unique and unrepeatable destinations that the Dominican Republic has to offer.

Our first stop begins in the country’s capital, Santo Domingo, one of the oldest cities on the American continent. If you want to stroll through streets lined with colonial-era buildings, Santo Domingo is the place for you. Lose yourself in the city’s most famous thoroughfare, Calle de las Damas, to reach the impressive Alcázar de Diego Colón. Make the most of your visit to Santo Domingo to meet the locals first hand and sample the local cuisine.

Another of the most popular excursions if you have decided to travel to the Dominican Republic is to visit Puerto Plata, another of the major tourist centres, as is the case with Punta Cana. In this region you will also have numerous wild beaches at your disposal, where you will be able to enjoy all kinds of water sports like never before. In fact, the small town of Cabarete is considered the windsurfing capital of the country.

Thousands of surfers from all over the world tame the impressive waves that its beaches of crystalline waters offer. And if you want to continue enjoying the parties and the nightlife, Puerto Plata also has plenty of places to spend the nights enjoying good music and getting to know its cultural richness with all kinds of shows.

Do you like extreme sports? Then you should try the Pico Duarte trekking route, the highest peak in the Antilles. At no less than 3,000m high, reaching the summit is an experience that rewards you with one of the best panoramic views in the country.

You will ascend surrounded by the rich and dense vegetation of its forest of pines and ferns where you will find magical corners such as the source of the two most important rivers of the Dominican Republic: Yaque del sur and Yaque del norte. This route is one of the most popular, so it is very normal that there are always many tourists and sportsmen and women willing to do it. It will take you 3 full days to complete the route, but during the excursion you will be able to learn more about the area, its culture and, of course, enjoy this natural landscape.

Finally, we recommend one of the most popular excursions for travellers looking for sustainable tourism. The mangrove forest of Los Haitises is an extensive forest with dense foliage and a great natural wealth around its wetlands. The mangrove swamp, which reaches up to 40 metres in altitude, offers the opportunity to visit it by renting a kayak to get lost along its narrow river paths. Although many areas can also be explored on foot, we recommend that you enjoy this kayaking experience to see first-hand everything from reptiles and tropical birds, to dolphins and even whales, not to mention the friendly and docile manatees.

But beware, it’s not all about nature; in the mangrove swamp you can also discover part of the Taino legacy of craftsmanship and marvel at their petroglyphs and cave paintings. An excursion full of magical moments in the most characteristic and beautiful nature of the Dominican Republic.

Fall in love with Saona Island

Located in the south of the country is Saona Island. This island, the largest in the country, belongs to the Cotubanamá or Parque Nacional del Este and is one of the most famous in the Dominican Republic for its marine wealth. Here you will have the opportunity to dive into its waters to lose yourself in its impressive coral reefs full of marine fauna.

Don’t forget to bring your snorkelling gear to swim with tropical fish, sea turtles, crabs and beautiful Caribbean starfish. One of the most popular snorkelling spots is Pepe Beach

One of the things you can’t miss on your visit to Isla Saona is a stroll through Mano Juan, a picturesque little fishing village with no more than two streets of colourful wooden houses, where there is no shortage of restaurants and souvenir stalls for visitors.

Nature lovers will find, less than 30 minutes from the village, the spectacular Laguna de los Flamencos (Flamingo Lagoon), with an enormous diversity of native birds, including the flamingos that give it its name. The early morning trekking routes around the lagoon are an exceptional opportunity to see the vast majority of these species, which is when they are most active.

The Turtle Recovery Centre is another must for animal and nature lovers. Here the different species of local turtles are protected and cared for, preserving their eggs for up to 96 hours before being released and studied.

And let’s not forget the paradisiacal beaches of fine white sand and swaying palm trees: Canto de la Playa beach is no less than the best on Saona Island, located on the southeastern tip of the island and reached by a dirt track through the lush vegetation next to the lagoon of the same name. A one-hour trekking route takes you from the village of Mano Juan, although you can also hire a motorbike with a driver to get there in much less time and without the heat.

Finally, don’t leave the island without sampling its gastronomic delights. The local food, specialising in fish, chicken, rice and coconut juice, is an experience not to be missed, with a special mention for the freshly grilled lobsters prepared to order.

The Dominican Republic is a country renowned as one of the top destinations for sun and beach lovers, offering not only the opportunity to swim in crystal clear waters and stroll along long white sandy beaches, but also the chance to learn more about its culture and, of course, take part in its lively local festivals. Not to mention a wide range of nature excursions for the more adventurous.

The country also boasts an enviable climate with temperatures rarely dropping below 20ºC and highs of 35ºC. No matter what time of year you prefer to travel, simply choose the one with the best value for money. Just pack your swimming costume, sandals and suntan lotion because you’ll be travelling to the country where time stands still so you can always enjoy your summer holidays in the Dominican Republic.
