Although it may seem complex, by following these simple tips, you can choose the Caribbean cruise that best suits your tastes and budget.
Among the factors to consider when deciding on a cruise type are:
The area of the Caribbean you want to explore. Itineraries usually cover three regions: the Western Caribbean, the Eastern Caribbean, and the Southern Caribbean ports.
Establish a budget. It’s important to know how much you can and want to spend in order to plan the cruise well and define all variables: destination, duration, type of ship, cabin, meal and beverage plan, excursions, etc.
The amount of time you can or want to spend travelling. The most common duration is a 4 to 7-night cruise, but you can extend that time to two weeks, which is also common, or even months if you have a generous budget.
Want to go on excursions? The cruise experience is not just about sailing, although that itself is an exciting experience. It also includes numerous visits to iconic places. It’s important to consider what type of excursions and how many you would like to do. Gathering information about the places to visit, the duration of the visit, and the type of excursion is key to designing your cruise.
What kind of leisure and entertainment activities does the cruise offer? While some passengers prefer to enjoy their time alone, in the company of their partner or family, others seek entertainment and want to fill their hours with fun activities such as sports, cultural events, games, escape rooms, dances, musicals, movies, magic shows, and more.
Choose the dates for your trip. As mentioned before, April and May are among the best months for a Caribbean cruise.
What type of cruise and company are you looking for? While taking a cruise is a group experience, you can choose between cruises that have the capacity for thousands of people, such as Royal Caribbean cruises, or more exclusive cruises with fewer shared common areas. Additionally, there are themed cruises that add more fun and excitement to the journey. There are cruises for newlyweds, singles, LGBTQ+ cruises, retro cruises, cruises for finding a partner, and more. These types of cruises bring together passengers with a common objective and make the experience more intense while aboard a ship.
Take note of the details of the ship you will be travelling on, especially the year of construction and how long it has been in service. Opt for modern fleets with new boats that provide a pleasant and comfortable travel experience.
Enquire about the type of food and beverages served on board, and consider if it is worthwhile and interesting to opt for the all-inclusive package. If you choose this option, you will have the same type of meals throughout, although companies like Costa Cruises and Royal Caribbean offer a variety of options with numerous specialty restaurants serving different cuisines from around the world, some of which are led by renowned chefs.
Deciding on the all-inclusive package is something to consider and depends on the number of scheduled excursions, how much you eat and drink, and if you follow any specific dietary requirements.
Who are you travelling with? In recent years, thanks to the popularity and offers of cruises in the Caribbean, many families have decided to book one of these cruises and participate in activities that can be enjoyed by the whole family or each member individually. The best family cruises include Disney Cruise Line in the Caribbean, Carnival Cruises, and Royal Caribbean Cruises, among others.
Can you imagine yourself on a white sandy beach, bathing in turquoise waters surrounded by palm trees and tropical fruits? A Caribbean cruise will take you to paradisiacal and beautiful islands such as Barbados, Jamaica, or Martinique, the legendary Bahamas, the modern city of Miami, or the archaeological and natural treasures of the Mexican Costa Maya.
If you already have a cruise in mind, here we invite you to learn more about the most popular cruise routes in the Caribbean – routes that have generated great enthusiasm and fully meet travellers’ expectations.
The Caribbean is a dream destination for many couples and families, as it promises idyllic locations, unique and exciting activities, crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches, and the opportunity to practice diving and other water activities in privileged and beautifully lush environments.
But what are the most popular destinations in the Caribbean? Which routes have received the most positive ratings from passengers?
Caribbean cruises are usually divided into Western Caribbean cruises, Eastern Caribbean cruises, and Southern Caribbean cruises. Each destination has its specific characteristics and a special charm, but they all have in common the ability to sail through some of the most beautiful and crystal-clear waters in the world.
Although there are many more, the main departure ports are Miami, Port Canaveral, or Havana, and there are three distinct routes that include different countries and the number of visits.
Among the offers and promotions for cruises in the Caribbean, you can find ideas for Eastern Caribbean cruises, which include the Bahamas, St. Thomas, the Virgin Islands, and more; Western Caribbean cruises, featuring points of interest such as Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, among others; and finally, Southern Caribbean cruises with destinations like Aruba, Martinique, and Margarita Island.
In some of these itineraries, there is the possibility of overnight stays for 1 or 2 nights at a particular point on the route, allowing for more time to explore and visit the destination.
This popular route starts from the ports of San Juan in Puerto Rico or Florida. It usually has a duration of seven days and makes stops at beautiful and touristy locations such as the Bahamas, St. Thomas, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Haiti, St. Maarten, and others. The stops are daily and the points are relatively close to each other with short distances between them.
Â
This cruise is ideal for tourists who want to enjoy sunny destinations and paradisiacal beaches, go on excursions, and discover corners and spaces of great scenic beauty with a wide range of water activities.
The Western Caribbean route usually departs from iconic and busy ports such as Miami, Florida, or Fort Lauderdale. However, it also offers the possibility to embark from other ports like New Orleans or Texas.
Â
Unlike the previous route, there are fewer excursions in this route, and there is a considerable distance between the destinations. It typically includes visits to places like Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Grand Cayman, Key West, the Dominican Republic, Belize, Costa Rica, or the island of Jamaica. These itineraries are truly attractive and filled with surprising and idyllic spots.
This last route has major embarkation ports in Florida, San Juan, Cartagena de Indias, and Barbados. The most common stops include the island of Martinique, Aruba, the island of Margarita, Curaçao, Antigua, Bonaire, Grenada, St. Kitts, and Nevis, among others.
This route usually has a duration of 10 to 14 days due to the number of destinations visited. It is advisable to reserve at least 10 days of travel to visit the destinations included in the cruise route and have some days to rest and enjoy the leisure and entertainment activities offered on the ship. This route consists of short sailing trips to cover the entire itinerary.
These are the three most popular itineraries for Caribbean cruises. These regions include cities and islands that are very different from each other, making it enriching to explore each one or choose the itinerary that aligns more with your personal preferences.
The Caribbean, one of the most charming and beautiful destinations in the world, offers a wide variety of itineraries. Each cruise company has its own selection, with companies like Costa Cruises offering over 30 itineraries in the Caribbean with departures from Guadeloupe or La Romana/Santo Domingo.
You can choose these itineraries with ease on our platform and plan the trip of your life experiencing a world that preserves a rich colonial heritage, a gastronomy full of colour and flavour, voodoo legends, mythological characters, pirate stories, as well as a truly attractive and unique atmosphere.
